Have you made any New Year's resolutions this year? Have you considered what you could do differently to reduce your environmental impact?
Why not try to commit to some sustainable goals for the year ahead, no matter how big or small. Here’s our top tips on where to start.
1.Explore the natural world
Tread a new path, watch the wide winter skies and reconnect with nature. Spending time in nature will rejuvenate you physically and mentally.
2. Reduce waste
A great resolution is to reduce waste. Here are some ideas:
Avoid single use items like carrier bags, coffee cups and cling film wherever possible. Long lasting alternatives are available for many items, like shopping bags- try bringing your own, keep them in the car or in your bag; reusable cups/bottles- invest in a glass, Stainless-steel or safe aluminium cup or bottle; beeswax wraps- trade in the clingfilm, not only do they look better, they keep your food fresher for longer.
Think a little beyond your standard recycling, find out if items you use or packaging can be recycled at a drop off point. Could you take your own containers to certain stores rather than buying plastic packaged food.
3. Grow your own food
Growing your own food can feel like a really rewarding resolution; you can get the kids involved or even grandkids. You can start off simple with potatoes and herbs etc. Grow your own fruit or plant a cherry tree.
4. Plant a tree (or several)
Planting season runs from November to March, so tick off your target for the year by planting a tree this winter. Planting a tree creates a home and food source for wildlife as well.
5. Bring your own Packed lunch
Make/take your own lunch in to work or college/university with you instead of buying plastic packaged supermarket options. Not only will this save you a good amount of money, you will save on waste as well. Further minimise your food waste, by planning ahead with meal plans and batch cooking e.g. soup for the week. Do you have leftover food from your dinner? Don’t waste the leftovers use them in or for your lunch also. Our Stainless Steel Leakproof lunchbox is perfect for transporting them.
6. Don't throw out useable items
Why not give a little this year - your waste could be another person’s treasure! If you are having a good clear out and wanting to get rid of old furniture or appliances, don’t just throw them away, someone else could make good use of those items. You could contact a local furniture re-use network who help to distribute unwanted furniture, goods and appliances to those in need. You could also advertise your items on social media groups/pages. Don’t forget to donate your old clothes and books to charity too.
7. Reduce your Energy Consumption
Consider everyday things like your energy consumption. Turn appliances off at the wall and switch lights off when not in use; even try switching to LED light bulbs. You could even switch to an energy company that offers 100% green energy.
Wishing you all a very happy 2023!
